Skiffledog (Hilton Valentine) - It's Folk 'n' Skiffle, Mate!

Skiffledog (Hilton Valentine) - It's Folk 'n' Skiffle, Mate! - 2004

from CDBaby
Hilton Valentine is best known for his work as the guitarist with the sixties British Invasion group, The Animals: most notably, his opening arpeggios in 'House of the Rising Sun.' To quote the book Fuzz and Feedback - Classic Guitar Music of the '60s, ''Undoubtedly what sold 'The House Of The Rising Sun' was an arresting arpeggiated solo guitar introduction that traced a brooding Am/C/D/F/Am/E/Am chord sequence. The intricacies of the performance were dissected by guitar students the world over. Even today the riff still occupies a place, somewhere around stage three, in the great 12-Step Mastering The Guitar programme.''

Hilton made his name in rock and roll, earning himself a world wide number one hit, nine additional top 40 hits, gold records, a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his handprint in Hollywood's Rock Walk of Fame, but his beginnings were based on folk.

He fronted his very first skiffle band at the age of 13. This is the music he would always return to. Even when he was touring the world playing rock and roll, at home he'd take out his acoustic and revisit the old skiffle music and write folk songs.

He's back to his roots again with a new studio recording of original acoustic music with some old skiffle thrown in. Having received airplay from several BBC Radio stations in the UK and in his home state of CT it has been well received by their listeners and fans all over the world. BBC Radio Scotland's senior producer, Stewart Cruickshank has this to say: ''Genius Animals guitarist returns to roots in fine style. A fine selection of material, which we'll be playing frequently in weeks and months to come. His own songs more than stand up to Mr. Lennon's and Mr. Leitch's.''

Hilton Valentine - Skiffledog on Coburg ST

Hilton Valentine - Skiffledog on Coburg ST - 2011

Hilton Stewart Paterson Valentine was born on May 21, 1943 in North Shields, Northumberland England. He immediately taught himself some chordsfrom a book called Teach Yourself a Thousand Chords and formed his own skiffle band called The Heppers.  They played locally in halls and at outdoor venues, with the newspaper calling them "a young but promisingskiffle group." The Heppers eventually evolved into the rock and roll band, The Wildcats which after some personnel changes had Tappy Wright on rhythm guitar.

Tappy was Hilton's best friend and became the road manager for The Animals. The Wildcats were a very popular band in the Tyne & Wear area getting continuous work in Church Halls, Working Men's Clubs and Dance halls. They decided to take it to the next step and recorded a 10" acetate LP at Morton Sound titled Sounds of The Wild Cats. In 1963 The Animals were starting to form.  Chas liked what he heard and asked him to join what was then called The Alan Price Combo. Sadly, the only evidence of this energetic guitar playing is the 1963 live Club - a-go-go recordings. In 1970 he recorded a solo album of what some people categorize as psychedelicized folk music titled "All In Your Head". Hilton has reunited with the original lineup of Animals three times since their split. In 1994, Hilton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Animals. In May 2001, he was inducted into Hollywood's Rock Walk of Fame along with the other Animals and had a two night reunion concert at the El Rey Theatre. Since 2004 Hilton has been concentrating on acoustic material, under the name SKIFFLEDOG titled CD "It's Folk 'n' Skiffle, Mate!".

With an acoustic guitar, snare, bass, washboard, spoons and shakers, Hilton Valentinedelivers very high energy Skiffle and Rock n' Roll with some mellow solo material sprinkled on top in album "Skiffledog in Coburg St.

All songs were recorded live in the studio. Only backing vocals and guitar solos were overdubbed.

Chris Laterzo - DriftWood

Chris Laterzo - DriftWood - 2004

from CDBABY
Recorded in his Venice, California living room studio, Laterzo's third album 'Driftwood' is an unaffected blend of rock, folk, and country. Laterzo accomplished what he set out to do on this self-produced project- an album that is unadorned and honest, with every jagged edge exposed, leaving behind a distinctively homegrown air.

From epic and electric ("Pandemonia" and "The Wind") to solo piano and guitar ("Ghost on the Road" and "How Much Love Did you Burn?") to country-folk numbers ("Good Woman" and "Driftwood"), the sound is stripped down with arrangements that don't muddle the song's intent. The performances on 'Driftwood', and the choice of instrumentation- acoustic and electric guitars, pedal steel, piano- capture and articulate the organic spirit of each lyric and song.

03. Driftwood
04. Starlit Milky Way

Jimmy Cornett - California Session [EP]

Jimmy Cornett - California Session - 2011

Jimmy Cornett is one of the few contemporary songwriters who as a music nomad seek inspiration on the street, far away from home. Cornett is a musician who affectionately maintains a bridge between the present and the past free of any commercial show effects. His style is influenced by life and song in the English rocker pubs, French country festivals, Scandinavian biker festivals, country round-ups in Las Vegas and dilapidated street cafes in Montevideo. These are genuine, true old-school experiences etched on his memories like tattoos. Love and ecstasy, pain and sadness are the meanderings and curves in what only appears to be an endless road of music. Cornett has developed a style of singing which is quite unique. The range varies from harmoniously gentle to utterly raw, creating an acoustic fever of emotions. His honesty and willingness to face up to risks is a dance with fire for many

Stepson - The Lost Tapes 1972-1974

Stepson - The Lost Tapes 1972-1974 - 2013

About forty years in the making, and finally the world has the second Stepson album! Utilizing tapes preserved by drummer Len Fagan then transferred to digital and mastered by bassist Bruce Hauser, this fine collection of twelve songs is as close as the world will ever get to a real second Stepson album.

Some is raw, some is embryonic, but it’s all prime stuff for fans to savor, reflecting the band’s “devil may care” attitude and rock ’n’ roll lifestyle. And just in case you don’t believe that the band liked to party, consider that the exact recording dates (and even some locations) have long been forgotten.

To borrow an old adage: If you can remember Stepson, you weren’t there. Kicking off with a crunching riff by guitarist Joey Newman, ‘Danger Zone’ is the heaviest track Stepson ever cut, replete with an ominous atmosphere reflecting the seedy side of their native Los Angeles; ‘Streets of Alameda’ (1974) is an ode to vocalist Jeff Hawks’ hometown, featuring a liquor store holdup and a stolen Lincoln used as the getaway car. ‘Flesh & Blood’ is the only track on here that got an official release, albeit by ex-Smith belter Gayle McCormick as the title track to her second solo album, released by Decca in 1972. This version showcases the riff in full glory. And if you don’t believe that this riff is strong, consider that The Tonight Show band played it for approximately two weeks in 1976, prompting Fagan to confront “author” Don Menza, who coincidentally did the Flesh & Blood album’s horn charts and was now claiming credit for the song under the title ‘Instant Heart.’ The song disappeared from late night TV show shortly thereafter. ‘Bad Situation,’ the only other 1974 track, describes the band’s predicament that year: a track that should have propelled them to the big time, but instead bounced off a brick wall like a tennis ball. The maracas and funkified quasi-Bo Diddley groove hint at Stepson’s growth and what might have been.

01. Danger Zone
02. Streets of Alameda
03. Can’t Help Myself
04. Flesh & Blood
05. S-H-A-K-E
06. Don’t Say Goodbye (Say Goodnight)

Howard Werth & The Moonbeams - King Brilliant

Howard Werth & The Moonbeams - King Brilliant  - 1975 (1982)

from AMG
After leaving the Brit rock outfit Audience in 1974 with a catalog of four albums, frontman, songwriter, and guitarist Howard Werth (who, like Willie Nelson, is well-known for his nylon-string guitar work) began a solo career. King Brilliant is his debut offering in that regard from 1975, and as such it is an interesting slice of British mainstream rock & roll that borders on roots and pub rock. Werth is an ambitious songwriter, as his outlandish orchestrations on "Got to Unwind," "Lucinda," and "Midnight Flyer" attest. But he never left the heart of rock & roll in order to get his more ambitious moments across. His sense of classic British irony is everywhere in evidence in the album's original 11 songs. "Mechanical Dream," from the same sessions in 1975, is included here as a bonus track. This is recommended to anyone with an interest in either Audience or in U.K. pre-punk rock.
