One For The Road - Memorial Concert Ronnie Lane

VA - One For The Road - Memorial Concert Ronnie Lane - 2014
Yours truly feels both elated and saddened, but which emotion should take precedence is another matter… This concert at the Royal Albert Hall was held in memory of Ronnie Lane, founding member of the Small Faces and the Faces. Lane tragically died in 1997, aged only 51 of pneumonia, in the final stages of his multiple sclerosis.

Thanks to Angel Air Records, the Memorial Concert, held at the Royal Albert Hall on 5th April 2004, is now available on DVD, offering a whopping three-and-a-half hours of superb entertainment delivered by artists such as Slim Chance (Lane’s band after The Faces split), Jones Gang, Steve Ellis, Mick Jones, Glen Matlock, Sam Brown (daughter of rock ‘n’ roller Joe Brown), Ronnie Wood, Paul Weller, Pete Townshend, Ocean Colour Scene, Steve Ellis, Steve Diggle, Midge Ure, Dennis Greaves, Deborah Bonham Band, Joe Marriott and Chris Farlowe.

Compere of the night was John Hellier, original Mod around town, and ‘Whapping Wharf Launderette Darling’, who greeted the many fans who had come from all over to assemble in the RAH. Hellier read out written tributes and apologies from Sir Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton, who were unable to participate due to conflicting schedules.

The evening covered the three main phases of Ronnie Lane’s career (Small Faces, Faces, and his solo work with Slim Chance and other artists), and each ‘phase’ was represented by various artists and bands who performed songs specific to each phase.

The CDs captures this and the general atmosphere brilliantly, while the sound quality is equally superb. Highlights – and there are many – include ‘Stone’, a Lane song about the evolution of conscience, performed by Pete Townshend and Slim Chance, and scorching guitar solos by Ronnie Wood. Sam Brown, a captivating singer by the way, missed her cue at one point as she “needed a wee” (obviously she thought of it as groovy), and ‘You’re So Rude’ cheekily delivered by Mick Jones and Glen Matlock. Midge Ure and Paul Weller also threw bona fide performances.

The concert featuring countless renditions of favourites such as ‘Itchycoo Park’, ‘Lazy Sunday’, ‘Cats Melody’, ‘Kuschty Rye’, ‘Maggie May’ and many more, also coughs up some surprises. Ronnie Lane’s brother Stan Lane was guest of honour at the concert, another guest was John Unwin, son of Professor Stanley Unwin, whose gobbledygook language had struck a big chord with Lane.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was an appearance by soulful blues-rocker Chris Farlowe, who belted out ‘All Or Nothing’ together with the Jones Gang as the final number of the night.

Rachel Fuller - Presents In The Attic with Pete Townshend and Friends

Rachel Fuller - Presents In The Attic with Pete Townshend and Friends - 2009

By Will Hermes from RollingStones.com
This double CD-DVD is culled from some homey 2007 showcases conceived by singer-songwriter Rachel Fuller, Pete Townshend's longtime partner. It's a mixed bag. Ben Harper and Amos Lee are predictably fine; a singing Jimmy Fallon, not so much. Naturally, Townshend is the main attraction: The Lou Reed duets are scrappy and essential. And when Tenacious D play an awesomely ridiculous Tommy medley for the Who composer, you can hear Jack Black loving his life mighty hard.

CD 01

01. Tommy Medley - Tenacious D
02. Let My Love Open the Door - Joe Purdy
03. Daisy - Joe Purdy
04. Sir Walter Raleigh - Rachel Fuller

08. Please Bleed - Ben Harper

Pete Townshend - Lifehouse Elements (repost)

Pete Townshend - Lifehouse Elements - 2000

from cduniverse
As most Who fans already know, Pete Townshend's next project after finishing TOMMY was to be a wildly ambitious multi-media event-including an album, a concert, and a movie - called LIFEHOUSE, with a storyline that was a combination of sci-fi and Eastern mysticism. The project eventually collapsed, partly due to early '70s technical limitations, but some of the songs later surfaced on official Who albums (principally WHO'S NEXT) and on several widely circulated Townshend bootlegs.

LIFEHOUSE ELEMENTS (an abridged version of a 6-CD set for sale on Townshend's website), collects various versions of the most important songs. Some are new, such as an astounding techno demolition of Who Are You, and a lovely acoustic guitar/string orchestra remake of Behind Blue Eyes, while some are old, including occasionally unfamiliar mixes of Townshend's one-man band demos of Pure and Easy, and Won't Get Fooled Again. Almost everything here is interesting on some level, and it goes without saying that this is an absolute must-have for Who fans.

There once was a note, pure and easy
Playing so free, like a breath rippling by
The note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me
Forever we blend and forever we die

Pete Townshend - Vocals, Various Instruments

Pete Townshend - Live Brixton Academy '85

Pete Townshend - Live Brixton Academy '85 - 2004

Pete Townshend and the Deep End Band played live for two benefit outings - November 1 and 2, 1985 at the Brixton Academy - to help support Townshend's own "Double O' Charities. The performances are excerpted and were used in a made-for-home-video, also called Pete Townshend's Deep End Live!.  However, significant interest in the project would ultimately yield a 10-song LP which was issued to retail a few months later. Townshend is backed by an ensemble that includes a core band of John "Rabbit" Bundrick, Chucho Merchán, Simon Philips and David Gilmour.

This is THE COMPLET SHOW. The double CD set presents many Who and Solo tracks, including some rare performances of tracks from the White City album, as well as covers of fifties and sixties classics.
