Weird Owl - Interstellar Skeletal

Weird Owl - Interstellar Skeletal - 2015

From AMG
Now a decade into their career, Brooklyn's Weird Owl return with Interstellar Skeletal, their fourth LP of cosmic, psych-inspired rock. As on their 2013 mini-LP Healing, Weird Owl continue to explore the more improvisatory, stoner rock spectrum of what has, at least in the 2010s, become a bit of a psych rock revolution. But while many younger bands are busy marrying the first wave of mid-'60s psychedelia with textural post-Flaming Lips electronic pop, Weird Owl continue to forge their own path of serious prog and Kraut-indebted experimental rock that manages to live just outside of trendiness. A mix of spacy, meandering guitar jams strewn with Pink Floyd-ian synth backdrops like "Flying Fortress" and the strong title cut, the album also introduces some nice acoustic textures on the the dreamy "Split from the Sun" and the brief coda "Interstellar Skeletal II." In keeping with their earlier work, the vocals remain somewhat buried under the waves of effects-laden guitars, not unlike early Spiritualized. It's a solid release with the quality musicianship and experimental nature fans have come to expect of Weird Owl, and while it may not break a lot of new ground, it remains true to the band's spirit.

Weird Owl - Healing

Weird Owl - Healing - 2013

Weird Owl formed in Brooklyn, NY in 2004 and has released two full-length LPs as well as several EPs. Their presence and longevity in the New York psych scene has garnered international attention and they have shared stages with bands such as White Hills, NAAM, La Otracina, Hopewell, Earthless, Sleepy Sun, Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, Quest for Fire, Spindrift and The Black Angels, including at the 2011 Austin Psych Fest.

Healing proves that Weird Owl to be a constantly evolving musical entity, striving to present itself in a continually fresh light. The fuzzed-out guitar tones that were once synonymous with the band have fallen into the background, and a more ambient, textured sound found its place in the forefront. Recorded and mixed by Jeffrey Berner (NAAM, Heliotropes, La Otracina) at Galuminum Foil Studio in Brooklyn in April and May of 2013, Weird Owl’s new musical direction revealed itself as an exciting and unique mind blast.

John Cassidy - Keyboard, Synth
Kenneth Cook - Bass, Keyboard, Synth, Back-up Vocals
Sean Reynolds - Drums, Percussion
Jon Rudd - Guitar
Trevor Tyrrell - Vocals, Guitar

Weird Owl - Nuclear Psychology

Weird Owl - Nuclear Psychology - 2007

by Gregory Heaney, AMG guide
Formed in 2004, Brooklyn's Weird Owl have a sound that falls somewhere  between the overblown excursions of fellow Brooklynites Oneida and the spacy, exploratory riffing of Black Mountain. The band has carved out a sound of its own, combining the influence of psych rock pioneers 13th Floor Elevators and the introspective vocal style of Neil Young. The result is a sound that layers warm fuzz and laconic, swirling synthesizers to create neo-psych that manages to feel experimental while harking back to a time when album-oriented rock was king and monolithic riffs roamed the Earth.

02. Thy Space Grows Long
03. White Hidden Fire
04. Tickle the Invisible
05. King of Flowers (Esp)
